Where Adults With Special Needs Truly Thrive

Alfa Development delivers life-changing day programs and residential services for special needs adults across northern New Jersey.

About Us

Forty years ago, a simple belief took root in Newfoundland, NJ: that adults with special needs deserve a full life, not just supervised one. Alfa Development was built on that conviction, and today it operates one of the most carefully run agencies in the region, offering day programs and group home living that families in Passaic and Morris counties have come to trust.

The people who come through Alfa's doors are not cases to be managed. They are individuals with preferences, friendships, and goals. Staff are recruited for genuine commitment, compensated competitively, and given the tools to do their jobs well. That investment in staff quality is the reason so many participants have been with Alfa for years, even decades, and the reason families consistently describe the experience as life-changing.

Alfa's newest group home on Oak Ridge Road represents the organization's continued growth. Residents who move in gain independence on their own terms, with trained support available around the clock. For families who have spent years wondering what the future holds for their loved one, that question finally has a real, reassuring answer.

What We Offer

Alfa Development organizes its support around two pillars: structured daytime engagement and safe, comfortable residential living.

The day program keeps participants active, socially connected, and building skills through activities tailored to individual ability levels. Whether someone is working on communication, job readiness, or simply enjoying a full schedule of meaningful interaction, the program meets them where they are. Transportation coordination, family communication, and individualized service plans are built into every participant's experience.

On the residential side, Alfa operates group homes that function as real homes, not facilities. Small household sizes mean staff can focus, relationships can form, and each resident's routine can be honored. Families are kept closely in the loop, and the agency's leadership maintains direct oversight of every home to ensure standards stay high.

Why Choose Us

Executive Director-level oversight ensures staff are equipped and participants receive consistent, high-quality daily care.
Competitive staff compensation reduces turnover, so your loved one builds relationships with familiar, trusted faces year after year.
Small group home sizes allow truly individualized attention, giving each resident a genuine sense of home and belonging.
Structured day programs are tailored to individual ability levels, keeping participants engaged, growing, and socially connected.
Families in Passaic and Morris counties have trusted Alfa for decades, with participants joining at age 21 and staying for life.
Ongoing facility expansion, including a brand-new group home, reflects Alfa's commitment to meeting growing community demand.

"Our son's experience with ALFA has been life-changing. He loves their day program and has been with ALFA since he turned 21. Recently, he was able to move into their newest group home. He is thriving under their care and working towards being as independent as possible. They truly care and respect the clients they work with.. Thank you, ALFA."

"Discrimination against medical marijuana users. I asked if I should bother applying as a medical marijuana patient. The answer was that I can just mask the urine test with a home remedy. They hire young west Milford high school graduates that provoke behaviors in the disabled and use street drugs inside the group homes . I am extremely offended that I was told on the spot I should not bother applying for the job With medical marijuana card. I am a mom of an autistic son. And way more qualified than the high school kids they hire. I would also not consider the homes at Alfa for my own autistic son. When I was told in the office to mask the grime test. Ty"
